SamX, GTX 970 had a great 1080p performance too, you can easily maxout almost every game with it. I bought GTX 980Ti just to be more future proof and because I plan to buy a 4K LED later on and SLI it. GTX 970 is a beast even for 2K, so if you buy it and overclock it, you don't need to worry about requirements on 1080p resolution for several years.
